Why Surgery Is the Right Choice for Acid Reflux Treatment
If you have been diagnosed with acid reflux, you have probably tried reflux medications, such as Prilosec OTC or a prescription medication like Nexium, to help with your symptoms. The reason these medications relieve symptoms for some patients is because they reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces. The fluid from your stomach refluxed into your esophagus contains acid, so reducing the acid in the fluid can sometimes help with symptoms. However, this is a problem because our bodies were made to have acid in our stomach for a reason. We are learning more and more that these medications negatively affect us and may lead to problems such as dementia, osteoporosis, and other complications.
Reflux is actually caused by a valve between the stomach and esophagus (the lower esophageal sphincter or LES) not working properly — NOT by too much acid production by the stomach. In order to address the true cause of the disease, the valve needs to be fixed and the only way to do that is surgically.
