New information revealed at the 2018 World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery offers exciting news for those suffering from Barrett’s esophagus. Results from a recent study have found that lower-esophageal sphincter (LES) augmentation offer unparalleled results when it comes to the regression rate of Barrett’s esophagus.

Prior to the reveal of this information, the treatment option with the highest regression rate was the Nissen fundoplication procedure. However, a Nissen fundoplication only had a regression rate of 40%. The lower-esophageal sphincter augmentation reportedly has a 70% regression rate.

While the numbers are impressive, there is still a lot of information that have yet to be collected. The results that Nissen fundoplication provides have been closely studied for decades, which means the amount of information and statistics available for study are plentiful.

The results on the effectiveness of LES do not provide information on the procedure’s success after five years or more. While more research over the course of several years will need to be done, the initial results are promising.
