Clinical Trials May Provide Access to New Technology for Treating GERD

There have been recent advances in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The FDA has approved StrettaEsophyX, and the LINX Reflux Management System to address the leaky valve that causes reflux, or the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

Even though these are all FDA approved, insurance may not cover these procedures, despite data showing cost-effectiveness, fewer side effects, and overall safety.

One way we offer these newer technologies is through clinical trials. At Institute of Esophageal and Reflux Surgery, we are involved in multiple clinical trials with these procedures and upcoming technologies. This gives us the opportunity to offer these treatment options to patients. Most of the time, the costs of the surgery are covered by the study.
