How Achalasia Affects the Esophagus

Achalasia is a very frustrating disease that many patients have to deal with. There is no known cause for this condition, it occurs equally in both men and women, and it can affect an individual at any stage in their life.

Achalasia can severely damage the esophagus in two ways. This disease destroys nerve fibers inside the esophagus, which prevents it from being able to push properly. Achalasia also damages the lower esophageal valve located at the lower end of the esophagus. This prevents the valve from being able to relax properly.

Currently, there is no known cure for achalasia, despite its predominance amongst the population. Dr. Reginald Bell can treat the symptoms you are suffering from to help manage any pain or discomfort. Contact us to schedule a consultation.
