A new article in the The American Journal of Gastroenterology has shown that Barrett’s esophagus can be effectively treated with fantastic results.

The study was done in order to understand how effective endoscopic eradication therapy (EET) is at treating and preventing the recurrence of Barrett’s esophagus when coupled with standardized reflux management protocol.

The study also analyzed how effective anti-reflux therapy is at eradicating intestinal metaplasia when optimized based on the way the patient responded to the treatment.

Out of the 221 patients in the study, 93% were found to no longer have intestinal metaplasia after roughly 11 months of treatment. 48 of the patients were not able to achieve complete eradication of intestinal metaplasia after three sessions of treatment.

These 48 patients then underwent a modified version of their reflux management treatment. This version was intended to optimize the process. After roughly one treatment, 45 of the 48 patients experienced the complete eradication of intestinal metaplasia. 13 patients experienced the resurgence of either intestinal metaplasia or dysplasia, but the overall rate of recurrence was significantly lower.

The study concluded that EET coupled with a standardized reflux management protocol is incredibly effective at treating and Barrett’s esophagus and preventing the recurrence of intestinal metaplasia. The study also proved that the improved reflux management treatments provided better results and decreased the chance of intestinal metaplasia returning.
