Recent Findings Establish a More Concrete Link Between PPI Usage and Kidney Disease

For some time, evidence has been mounting that has linked the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) with the development of chronic kidney disease. Despite this evidence, additional research was still needed to establish a more concrete link between PPI use and kidney disease.

Recent findings have shown a consistent link between the use of PPIs and the development of kidney disease, as well as its progression to end-stage renal disease. Researchers analyzed the results of numerous different studies on the subject and found a “robust and remarkably consistent” association between the two. The diverse range of studies that were analyzed makes it hard to refute these findings.

At Institute of Esophageal and Reflux Surgery, we offer a number of highly effective surgical treatments for gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, and other conditions that are commonly treated with PPIs. Although some patients may be apprehensive about undergoing these more intensive treatments, they do provide outstanding results and are less likely to cause significant issues such as kidney disease. Contact Institute of Esophageal and Reflux Surgery today to schedule a consultation with board-certified general surgeon Dr. Reginald Bell.
