The Long-Term Health Problems Associated with PPI Use

The best treatments are the ones that address the source of the issue, not just the symptoms produced by the issue. In people who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the source of the issue is a faulty valve that allows the fluid in the stomach to rise up into the esophagus.

For a long time, a type of drug known as proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) was the solution for this issue. Although PPIs offer some relief from the symptoms caused by GERD, they do not actually address the faulty valve. PPIs simply reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Individuals who take PPIs find that once they cease taking the medication, their symptoms return with the same severity.

In addition to not actually addressing the source of GERD, PPI use can cause a multitude of long-term problems, including the following issues:

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies

  • Osteoporosis
  • Heart attacks
  • Pneumonia
  • Kidney disease
  • Dementia

In order to properly treat GERD, the faulty valve connecting the esophagus and stomach must be fixed. At Institute of Esophageal and Reflux Surgery we offer multiple options for treating GERD, including the following:

  • LINX
  • Stretta
  • EndoStim
  • EsophyX/TIF
  • Laparoscopic fundoplication
