Why Test for Gastroparesis Before Antireflux Surgery?

Jun 04, 2015

We started testing for gastroparesis before any antireflux surgery and have been surprised at the number of patients that have delayed gastric emptying, but do not have typical gastroparesis symptoms (ie nausea, vomiting). There have been a few studies recently published that show how antireflux surgery can break down faster if gastroparesis is present.

If your stomach emptying is delayed before surgery, we will check it 3 months after surgery. Most of the time after surgery, the gastric emptying normalizes. If it does not, we will discuss how to manage this based on the severity of the delay.
